New Discussion Opportunity: Tell Us Your Opinion - Becoming Adults

Share your views with eSight members about workplace
problems and how you have resolved them. "Tell Us Your
Opinion" is an open dialogue board for exploring,
explaining, elaborating and evaluating career
management issues.

This week's topic: How have you become
an adult in the eyes of others?

"With the mainstream media continuing to
perpetuate stereotypes about people with disabilities
and the relative isolation of individuals with visual
impairments, I believe those of us who want to gain
our independence and adulthood through meaningful
employment have our work cut out for us.

"If that's true (and I hope it's not), I then
wonder: How can we best prepare ourselves for helping
our closest associates in our little corner of the
world see us as whole, mature human beings who can
contribute to an organization's success?

"How do we know when we're considered adults by
our coaches, co-workers and supervisors? Three
measures of adulthood are important to me. I'm allowed
to work both independently and in teams, like everyone
else. I'm allowed to make mistakes and learn from
them. I'm given the opportunity to develop my skills.
In other words, no paternalism. I'm not a child
anymore.

"As a person with a visual impairment, how have
you become an adult in the eyes of others? We need
your insight."
- Jim Hasse

Highlights From Earlier Discussions: Braille, Long-term Commitments

Is Braille essential to success?

"There is, I believe, a correlation between
ability to read Braille and possible employment. And
while that correlation may be a perceived one on my
part, I know this: My ability to spell is less in
question because I learned to read Braille. My ability
to learn new words is greatly enhanced by computer
software, but, if I had to rely on remembering a
spelling by putting it in a spell-checker rather than
writing it down, I would not be employed for long."
- mystery

Would offering employers long-term commitments
increase job opportunities for those with visual
impairments?

"There is a definite relationship between
employers' concerns about turnover and the hiring of
disabled people, especially blind ones. The employer
is looking at costs involved in recruiting, hiring and
training new employees and of the lost work while a
position is vacant. Add to this the employer's
concerns about the cost of accommodation for a blind
worker. It is definitely possible that this latter
cost would be balanced out if the assurance is made
that a blind employee will stick around a minimum
number of years."
