Editor's Guide to this Issue:

That's Gratitude for You

This week our members in the United States celebrate
Thanksgiving. Perhaps this is a good time to think
about when it is appropriate to be grateful -- and
when it's not.

Thanks but no thanks

A New Slant on the U.S. Job Market

As we move into the new economy, old occupational
categories and traditional notions of what skills are
in highest demand don't quite ring true anymore, says
Robert B. Reich, former U.S. Secretary of Labor.

New Concept in Hospitality Employment Training

Thanks to all those who participated in the seminar on
November 8 about the National Statler Center for Careers
in Hospitality Service. And thanks to Jeanette from MA

As the first project of its kind, the National Statler
Center for Careers in Hospitality Service provides disabled
individuals with the right tools for successful careers in
this rapidly growing industry. Graduates of the
comprehensive program are computer-literate and
job-ready, equipped with a thorough knowledge of
hospitality industry standards.

Now you can listen to three November 8 audio files as
Statler's Sean Doyle discusses the hospitality training
program available at the center.

Feedback from Entrepreneur: agassa.com:

Networking Helped Us Find Needed Talent

"We have found networking to be valuable for us, as
we endeavor to find the talent we need to extend our
professional IT/Web accessibility services to
commercial and government organizations.

"Although general solicitation for employees/consultants
via Internet newsgroups and other communication means
usually helps us locate prospective candidates for the
kind of demanding and detail-oriented work we perform
for our clients, more often than not the number of
people we actually hire is very small compared to the
number who respond to these 'technical cattle calls.'

"Even more disappointing to us is the number of times
that we have hired someone to perform technical work --
only to find that they were much better at "positioning
their capabilities" when looking for a job than they
were at actually performing the work we needed once
we hired them. Many times, we have found ourselves in
the position of paying for work twice (i.e., hiring
a second person to do the work), and that just makes
our life more complicated. Our customers expect to
receive value for their dollar, and we simply must
receive value for the dollars we spend on
employees/consultants.

"On the other hand, we have been pleasantly surprised
and pleased with the quality of work and the work
ethic of the people we have hired as a result of
direct networking. Referrals from organizations such
as eSight have proven to be very valuable to us
because the people we have hired so far have been
1) highly motivated, 2) as proficient in their
technical skills as they claim to be, and
3) demonstrating a strong work ethic and an intense
desire to learn more. In short, they do what they
promise to do, within the schedule and budget they
have committed to. As a company, we operate this way,
and the employees we have hired as a result of our
networking experiences have consistently performed
this way.

"In short, networking through eSight helps us succeed
as a business."

Two Employers Offer Accommodation Ideas

Adaptive Tools Your New Employee Needs to Do the
Job," we offered advice to employers. Now two
employers turn the tables and offer their own
suggestions for accommodating visually impaired
workers.

Did You Know...?

How You Can Interact With Other Members

Did you know... that you can connect with other
eSight members on our dialogue boards?

Since its first day on the Internet a year ago, eSight
has been a "Careers Network." A "network" is defined
as "an interconnected or interrelated chain, group,
or system."
Merriam Webster OnLine

In this world of the givers and the given-to, we've
designed eSight to be that "interconnected or
interrelated chain" -- a career management site of
the blind or visually impaired, by the blind or
visually impaired and for the blind or visually
impaired.

There are many ways to interconnect on eSight. The
easiest way is to use the many dialogue boards you
can find throughout the site. Dialogue boards are
sometimes called forums or message boards, but,
whatever they are called, they are web-based
tools for conversation -- similar to newsgroups
but conducted entirely on a web site such as
eSight Careers NetworkTM.

From our regular "Turning our Experiences Inside Out"
to the topical dialogue board, "Idea Exchange," in the
On the Job Ramp, Entrepreneurial Junction and Employee
Connection sections, you can take eSight a step
further and make it a tool where you can be the giver
of advice, of support, of resources, of experience,
of your own stories, of leadership, of hopes and
dreams -- of whatever you want to share with others
who are traveling down your same path.

Just go to any section's home page and scroll down to
find the discussion board that needs your input to
make eSight Careers NetworkTM a true "network!"

Next week we will look at some of the tools you can
use to make your interaction via eSight's dialogue
boards even more useful!

Have a favorite eSight tool? We'd love to hear about
it and how you use it. Just send a message to Nan
Hawthorne, editor, .
